Outside the Classroom

Outdoor learning plays a pivotal role at Grimsdell, offering a unique and enriching dimension to children's educational experiences.

Recognising the importance of connecting theoretical knowledge with real world applications, we embrace outdoor learning to foster deeper connections with our termly topics. This holistic approach enhances understanding by allowing students to witness and engage with the practical aspects of their studies.

The benefits of applying classroom-based learning to the outdoor environment are vast. Beyond academic achievement, this approach nurtures a sense of wonder and curiosity, promoting a lifelong love for learning. Through hands-on experiences, children develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and a profound understanding of the world around them.

One particularly impactful aspect of outdoor learning is the focus on nature. Learning about the environment not only imparts knowledge but also promotes positive well-being and instils a sense of responsibility and respect for the natural world. By immersing students in nature, Grimsdell contributes to the development of environmentally conscious pupils who understand the importance of preserving and protecting the planet.

The EYFS classes each have direct access to the outdoors from their classrooms, fostering a seamless integration of outdoor learning into the curriculum. This is in addition to their weekly Forest School education. Moreover, in addition to their fortnightly Forest School sessions, Key Stage One now benefit from regular sessions in our grounds, where they are able to extend their learning beyond the confines of the traditional classroom.

Beyond our regular practice, Grimsdell also takes part in initiatives such as Outdoor Classroom Day. This dedicated day allows pupils to engage in a range of active and experiential activities that forge meaningful connections with their studies.

Our commitment to outdoor learning extends even further through school trips, specialist visits, and workshops, ensuring a comprehensive and dynamic educational experience that transcends the boundaries of the conventional classroom setting.
