How 3+ Entry Works at Grimsdell, Mill Hill Pre-Prep
Childhood is defined by curiosity, wonder and rapid growth, and Nursery is where this journey often begins. At Grimsdell, Mill Hill Pre-Prep, 3+ entry refers to children joining our Nursery in the September after they turn three. It marks the very beginning of an exciting, discovery-led educational journey.
Securing a place at 3+ gives your child a gentle and happy introduction to school life in a warm and nurturing environment. Beyond the immediate benefits of specialist early years teaching and outdoor learning, 3+ entry provides a seamless, stress-free pathway through Grimsdell and onto the Mill Hill Schools, without the pressure of 4+ or 7+ entry tests later down the line.
What Makes Grimsdell's 3+ Nursery Special?
At Grimsdell, Nursery is far more than standard childcare; it is a carefully crafted early educational environment designed to encourage curiosity and build early confidence. Grounded in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, our Nursery curriculum balances child-initiated play with structured, teacher-led discovery.
Set within the 120 acres of the Mill Hill Schools grounds, our environment offers a rare combination of space, freedom and purpose. Children move seamlessly between indoor and outdoor learning, fully immersed in both joyful and meaningful experiences. Our ‘Nursery in Nature’ approach exemplifies this balance: time in Forest School fosters confidence, resilience and problem-solving, while classroom learning secures strong academic foundations.
Three-year-olds thrive when they feel secure and known as individuals. Grimsdell maintains generous adult-to-child ratios, pairing each child with a dedicated Key Worker who tracks their developmental milestones, supports their pastoral needs and maintains close, daily communication with parents.
The 3+ Admissions Journey at Grimsdell
One of our key entry points at Grimsdell is Nursery at 3+, with approximately 40 places available each year. We welcome applications from families seeking a nurturing and inspiring start to their child's educational journey. At Grimsdell, our admissions process is designed to help us get to know your child in a relaxed and supportive environment, while giving families the opportunity to learn more about our school community and approach to early years education.
From registration and assessment through to the offer of places, we aim to make the process as straightforward and transparent as possible. Below, you'll find everything you need to know about applying for a Nursery place and what to expect at each stage of the admissions journey.
1. Visit Us
We encourage families to visit us at one of our Open Mornings or Midweek Tours. These offer the opportunity to see first-hand what life is like at Grimsdell, explore our facilities, hear from our Head and meet our staff.
2. Register Your Child
Submit a formal registration form through the Admissions Portal.
3. Invitation to Assessment
All families who join our initial registration list will be invited to attend a Nursery assessment. Once the initial registration list has reached capacity, families can join a reserve list and may be offered an assessment place should a registered applicant withdraw.
As demand for places is high at both of our main entry points, we strongly encourage families to register as early as possible.
Our 3+ Nursery assessments take place each November before your child’s year of entry.
The assessment process is designed to be relaxed, engaging and age-appropriate. Families will take part in an informal meeting with the Head, while children participate in a child-led, play-based assessment that allows them to explore, interact and demonstrate their natural curiosity.
Assessments are held in our unique outdoor learning environment, known as the Cabin in the Woods, where families remain together throughout the experience. This welcoming setting helps children feel comfortable and enables us to get to know each child in a natural and supportive way.
4. Offers and Acceptance
Following the assessment, formal offers are sent out. Upon accepting a place, families are welcomed into the Grimsdell community with induction events, stay-and-play taster sessions and personalised settling-in schedules ahead of September.
What Are Teachers Looking For at 3+?
It is completely natural for parents to feel nervous about a school assessment for a three-year-old. However, it is essential to remember that at 3+, we are evaluating developmental readiness, not academic knowledge. Children are not expected to read, write, count to 100 or sit still for long periods.
During our relaxed Stay and Play sessions, Grimsdell's Early Years team gently observes key natural behaviours that signal a child is ready to thrive in a nursery environment:
- Social Interaction & Sharing: How your child relates to other children and adults, whether through sharing a toy, making eye contact or taking turns during play.
- Curiosity & Engagement: A natural eagerness to explore new toys, investigate sensory activities or engage with their surroundings.
- Communication & Listening: The ability to express simple needs, follow basic instructions (such as lining up or putting toys away), and respond to simple stories or songs.
- Gross & Fine Motor Skills: How they move around the room and handle building blocks, paintbrushes or puzzle pieces.
Transitioning into School Life: Preparing Your Child
Preparing a three-year-old for Nursery isn't about teaching academic skills; it's about nurturing the independence and emotional confidence that make the first days at school feel like an exciting adventure.
Here are a few gentle ways to support your child at home before September:
- Encourage Self-Care & Independence: Practise putting on coats, pulling on shoes, washing hands and using the toilet independently. These small wins build enormous confidence in a classroom setting.
- Build Social Stamina: Organise playdates, visit local parks or join group activities where your child gets used to sharing space, waiting for a turn and playing alongside peers.
- Practise Short Separations: Leaving your child briefly with trusted family members or caregivers helps them learn that you always return, making drop-off time in September much smoother.
- Share Stories About School: Read books about starting Nursery together and talk warmly about making new friends, playing outdoors and meeting their new teachers.
