BOOKS OF THE WEEK

This week, three of our Junior Librarians – Affan, Jacob and Mia – have all chosen non-fiction books and they have three very different choices, reflecting the diverse subject areas available in our library.

Firstly, Mia recommends Let’s Make Art by Susie Brooks.

Mia’s reason for her choice:“If you like to make things, as I do, then this will be the perfect books for you! I wonder what you will make?”

Mrs Harvey would also support Mia’s choice. Children often make items from craft books to display on our library learning wall. Utilising such books teaches children the importance of sequencing and understanding the process of following instructions. There is a wonderful sense of fulfilment and achievement when a project is completed!

Mrs Harvey encourages the borrowing of non-fiction books. Non-fiction books are a popular choice by many of our Grimsdell borrowers. I have written previously about the importance of non-fiction in the development a child’s literacy skills. Non-fiction underpins all other learning: comprehending non-fiction is a life skill. The reading and sharing of non-fiction literature develops reading comprehension, builds background knowledge and develops analytical skills.

How do you encourage your child to read non-fiction if they are a reluctant non-fiction reader? I often encourage children to pair their fiction book with a non-fiction text, as this can make their enjoyment and understanding of the fiction text much richer. Competent readers make meaning from a text not only by knowing what the words mean, but by bringing what they know of the world to the text. It’s worth noting that children are more likely to engage with a non-fiction text related to a story that they are emotionally invested in. Alternatively, go with your child’s interests. Whether it is dogs or princesses, find non-fiction books to match your child’s passions. Include ‘how to’ books such as Junk Modelling that teach them how create new and exciting items or try a science experiment book for all the budding scientists out there! We have a wide range of non-fiction books – I am sure there is something to tempt everyone!

Secondly, Affan is set to expand his knowledge with his choice of Great White Sharks by Deborah Nuzzolo.

Affan tells us: “ Sharks are my favourite animals and I really enjoy learning new facts about this species.”

Mrs Harvey fully supports Affan’s choice. This particular non-fiction text delves deep into the lives of these magnificent creatures. We all know sharks for their sharp teeth and hunting skills – but – what are the facts behind the myths? What makes sharks different from one another? From tiger sharks to hammerheads and great whites, this book helps you to learn what makes each shark special and unique.

Finally, Jacob recommends a book to sharpen up your football skills – to set you on the path of becoming a professional footballer, Goal!: Football As You've Never Seen It Before by DK.

Jacob’s reason for his choice: “I LOVE football and my dream is to be a professional football player. This book will help you develop your skills.”

Mrs Harvey also agrees that this is a very informative book. Not only does the book give tips, ideas and sessions to improve your game, it also explores the history of football, how to run a football team and explains all the different tournaments and trophies. This book will really help you to become an expert!

Happy Reading!
